Do adults need to worry about immunity as well?

We all are born with our own immune system, but everyone’s is slightly different, someone having a strong one and for someone, it may be a bit weak.

On the whole, our immune system naturally does a remarkable job of defending us against disease-causing viruses. But sometimes it fails: a virus invades successfully and makes us sick.

Our immune system is our main line of defense against illness, so it definitely makes sense to keep it in top shape. And definitely, there are certain things we can do to try to bolster it.

That’s especially true during cold and flu season.

A well-functioning immune system is the key to providing a good defense against pathogenic organisms and eating the right foods can keep our immunity in working order.

Our immune system is actually made up of multiple layers of defense which includes physical barriers like our skin and hair, and specialized cells inside our body that recognize and attack foreign substances like viruses and bacteria.

Adding plenty of fruits and vegetables in our diet can boost our immune system, arming our body with antioxidants it needs to fight oxidative stress, which includes contracting a sickness, in our body.

Vitamin D also plays an important role in supporting the immune system by helping our body produce antibodies, which can then fight illness, sending itself to different areas of our body, including our bones, intestines, colon, brain, and immune cells, where it binds with the receptors on these cells and ultimately switches them on.

Apart from the most natural source being the sun’s UV rays, we can also load up on Vitamin D rich foods to boost our intake, including fatty fish and seafood, mushrooms, eggs and fortified foods.

As we age, our immune response capability reduces, which in turn contributes to more infections and illness.

While some people age healthily, the unfortunate truth is that compared with younger people, the adults are more likely to contract infectious diseases.

All about adult immunity in India

There is definitely a connection between nutrition and immunity in the elderly, which could be micro-nutrient malnutrition, in which a person is deficient in some essential vitamins and trace minerals.

These can be obtained from dietary supplements like Ensure by Abbott which could help adults maintain a healthier immune system.

If our diet is not providing us with all our micro-nutrient needs, or if as adults, we don’t like vegetables anymore, taking a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement may bring the desired health benefits, as also the possible beneficial effects on our immune system.

Bottom line: Adults too definitely need to worry about immunity as well and should adopt dietary habits that can strengthen the immune system.

Of course, we can do everything right and still get sick. But doing our best to boost your immune system now means our body will be that much more prepared for tackling whatever may come our way later.
